"Berenson. An out-of-the way planet that's been fought over by House Marik and House Liao ever since the Star League collapsed. Principal export is corn, and it has only one city of any real size. If you ever wanted a textbook example of 'bucolic backwater', this planet is it.
"So why am I talking about it now? Because, fifteen years ago, I accepted a contract to raid Berenson that nearly cost me my command and my life. I got set up for war crimes and sentenced to death by firing squad... all because some wild-eyed reactionary from the Word of Blake needed a scapegoat to embarrass his former brethren in ComStar.
"Now, not many people know anything about that little incident. They know all about how the Word of Blake took over Terra by posing as the 21st Centauri Lancers regiment, of course. The Word held the Lancers' families hostage for the duration of their little scheme. People really should have taken note of how the Word does business, but no one ever seemed to take them seriously. They sure as hell started paying attention after the Word subjected Outreach to a saturation nuclear bombardment, though by then it was too late..."
