6 Glasgow, Scotland Leaning against the railing overlooking the main runway of Glasgow Airport, Jim Brandon was making the most of a quiet spell before yet more craziness descended on him from on high. He had been caught up in traffic twenty miles outside the city when the Evil Elements staged their attack the day before. It wasn’t as if he could simply jump out of his car, leap into the sky and zoom to the rescue. Hell, he hadn’t even decided on what design he wanted for a costume... and there was no way he would entertain any of Ginger’s suggestions. Jim looked to his left, to where Hye-Jin and Sam were standing. It was Sam’s first time ever at an airport and she was taking in the sights with interest. For her part, Hye-Jin was looking at the parked airliners with a critical eye. She was almost certainly figuring out aspects of their design from sight alone. There was a faint creaking sound, a sound of metal being squashed. He looked down at where

5 Glasgow, Scotland Suncore wondered when it was that what she was doing had stopped being... weird. Flying and trading fire with metavillains; meeting women thrown forwards through time and space; discussing the presence of alien technology on Earth; encountering a total idiot able to summon his future self back to the present day; living through a roadside explosion. She dodged sideways and the lightning bolt thrown up at her from the masked woman in the red and black costume missed her by an arm’s-length. The other woman with her let go of their comrade and braced herself to attack. Her flesh gave off a brief cloud of steam as her body became covered with a solid layer of crackling ice. “You’d better go help them,” Freebird said, wincing at the exchange of fire behind the hospital’s main building. “You’re sure?” “They’re probably outnumbered,” she pointed out. “I’ll keep an eye on this one.” Red Dragon looked down at the

4 Glasgow, Scotland “Don’t start taking things apart.” Duncan Bancroft looked up, startled. He thought for a moment about denying that had been exactly the thing that was on his mind, but realised there was no point. The screwdriver in his hands was visible proof. David Llewellyn was wearing his Red Dragon costume, minus the helmet and gauntlets. He drifted in through the doorway and across the room to where Duncan was standing, right in front of the articulated rack holding the Mechman battlesuit. He gave the screwdriver a meaningful look. “Sorry,” Duncan said, turning to place the tool down on a nearby side table. “James and Damsel have put a lot of hard work into that tin can. They’d be bloody upset if you pulled it to pieces.” “I was wondering about the control systems and I wanted to have a closer look.” David nodded. “Let us know first, okay?” “Okay. And, well... Thanks.” “‘Thanks’?”

3 Copenhagen, Denmark The fire escape door at the far end of the alley was unlocked, just as he had been told. Casting one last look back over his shoulder, Evan Becker pulled the door open and slipped inside, pulling it shut behind him. He locked the door’s release bar and looked around, taking in his surroundings. He was standing in a disused receiving dock, dimly lit, with a few discarded wooden packing crates scattered here and there. Some loose papers were gathering dust on the floor at his feet. If he strained his hearing, he could just barely make out traffic passing by outside the front of the derelict building. It was much as he was expecting: a quiet and out-of-the-way place to meet up and talk business. Not the type of business involving produce deliveries or a major corporate buyout, you understand. More like the type of business that would get folks at Interpol and the EuroStars all kinds of interested. Evan walked over to the nearest

2 Glasgow, Scotland “Ugh,” said Samantha Casey, wrinkling her nose and disgusted by what she was seeing on the computer display. “This is for real, Damsel? This isn’t from some horror movie?” “This is for real. This is from last week, at a medical supplier in the outskirts of Paris. He flew there and broke in through an upper-floor window.” “Fuck. He makes me look normal. What happened to him?” Seated at the workstation to Sam’s left, Damsel’s hands danced across the keyboard to pull up what looked like a police report and a series of photographs. “He has been identified – tentatively – as Dr Francisco Abrantes. Abrantes worked at The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp; his field of expertise was entomology, specialising in how insects transmit diseases. There was a break-in at the Institute one night and by all indications Abrantes was attacked. He went missing after that.” Damsel pointed at the report. “The lab was

Foreword Help is on its way. -John Tracy, Thunderbirds Are Go 1 Monrovia, Liberia The large oblong structure located halfway down Railway Avenue was nothing memorable. It had a small parking area out front and a set of glass doors providing entrance into the reception area. An access lane led around to the back yard, where several locked shipping containers were standing out in the open next to a roller-shutter door large enough to reverse a small truck into. That shutter was partly open, just high enough for people to walk in and out. There was a clutter of crates, boxed supplies and larger objects under dust covers visible within. On all the paperwork, 160 Railway Avenue was a long-term storage business catering to private and commercial customers. It had been bought up by an overseas investor a little over a year ago, and it still did some storeroom work. The utility bills and corporate taxes were paid on time and as far as the neighbours were concerned, there was

11 Namib Desert, Namibia Wind whistled through the punctured outer hull, making it seem as if the deserted, debris-littered corridors harboured restless ghosts. It seemed more than appropriate; a great many people had died when the Strato-Base came crashing down out of the heavens. Morning sunlight streamed in at an angle through the series of holes in the armour plating. Here and there along the deckhead lengths of severed electrical cable dangled limply. It was highly unlikely they still posed a danger but the explorer made a point to avoid contacting any of them. No sense in taking needless risks. Picking her way along the corridor, making her way aft, she found another body. After all this time it was nothing more than bones, boots and the ragged scraps of a uniform; there was no way to determine the cause of death. A few metres beyond the skeleton there was a pressure door, closed tight, complete with a manual locking wheel in the centre. The

10 Glasgow, Scotland “These were all Jean’s mates back in the day?” “That’s right, Barry. The Fraternity, as was.” David Llewellyn looked up from the five translucent holograms floating in the air over the communication centre’s chart table. “They came apart in the same incident that brought Jean here. Most of them are dead now, but Fleetfoot there ran for it. He’s never popped back up again.” “David, ask you something?” “Fire away, Duncan.” “Where are we going to go? What are we going to do, even?” “You’re worried about those evil bastards who blew up your homes?” “I think Duncan’s talking more about the authorities, David.” David, Duncan and Barry looked around as Jim Brandon walked up to join them at the chart table. Jim raised an eyebrow at the slogan on the front of David’s newest tee shirt that read: I used to be a people person – then people ruined it for me. “Yeah, I am. Thing is

9 Glasgow, Scotland Choe Hye-Jin blinked her eyes open and wondered blearily if the sounds of whirring mechanical men would ever go away. The click-hiss-click of pistons and actuators getting closer, advancing through the falling African darkness seemed to echo from all around her and... “Hye-Jin?” She looked up. She had gone to sleep on a couch and someone had covered her with one of those soft drapes she had seen aboard the aircraft. No, not someone. Damsel. Standing only a few feet away with a metal tray loaded with a teapot and cups in her hands, Damsel was regarding her with those disquieting blue eyes. She seemed to be concerned. Hye-Jin took a moment to study the garments Damsel wore. She was dressed in what appeared to be loose casual attire, although the trousers – if that was what they were – seemed most immodest, given they were back in the British Empire... Hye-Jin caught herself there. A great deal of time had passed. So

8 Newcastle, England You can’t simply go out and get yourself a degree in metacriminal studies. Even in an age obsessed with social media and filming absolutely anything and everything no matter how pointless it might be it’s a sad truth there are some fields that don’t ever get covered online. Bertram Hayes knew that only too well. You go hunting around various websites for hints and tips on how to construct a man-portable plasma pulse cannon out of copper wire and scrap parts and before you know it, you’re getting noticed by the kind of people who can make your life either very difficult or very short. It’s the same if you’re looking for exotic, hard-to-get raw materials such as iridium ingots. There are not that many sources you can go to and they are all watched carefully. If you’re still determined to make a go of supervillainy, you’ve got to find your way past these obstacles. You have to be dedicated. Most of all, you’ll have something to prove – to your
